One of Vancouver’s first specialty coffeeshops, Revolver is a must-visit for any self-proclaimed coffee snob. Stylishly designed with a laboratory-inspired brewing bar, this multi-roaster bar sources beans from roasters across the globe on a constantly rotating menu, each brewed-to-order through various different methods. It’s well worth the daily drop-in just to try something new – or if you’re short on time, Revolver also offers a tasting flight so you can experience all the different tasting notes side by side.
Head to the backroom and you’ll usually find a handful of laptops open and people quietly getting work done, making it a solid pick for business travelers and remote workers who need a good espresso and a place to actually focus.

2. Nemesis Coffee
Recently ranked No. 15 on the World’s 100 Best Coffee Shops list, Nemesis Coffee got its start in the neighbouring Hastings Crossing area in 2017, just steps from Gastown’s edge. You can’t go wrong with a pour-over or espresso-based coffee – either way, it’s smooth and expertly brewed. And if the coffee alone isn’t enough to win you over, the mortadella supreme croissant sandwich sure will.

3. Saunter Coffee
A more recent addition to the neighbourhood, Saunter Coffee’s warm countertops and brick interiors are designed to slow down. In addition to a traditional coffee menu, they love to get creative with the seasons, with specialty drinks like grapefruit espresso tonic and tiramisu cold cream iced coffee. Behind the compact front counter sits a hidden courtyard patio out back, a quiet, plant-filled nook that regulars treat like their own living room.

4. Timbertrain
Set inside a heritage building with high ceilings and train-carriage seating, Timbertrain is another Gastown institution. Best known for their rotating slow bar pour-overs, a cup here is rich, smooth, and consistent. Beans are sourced from Colombia to Costa Rica – find something you love and you can take your favourite Timbertrain roast home with you.

5. Birds & the Beets
A true local favourite, no Gastown cafes list is complete with Birds & the Beets. A more food-forward cafe, Birds & the Beets sources their beans from Bows Coffee Roasters based in Victoria, BC, and also bakes their own sourdough in-house. The space spans two entrances, on Powell and Alexander, with plenty of light and an easy pace that makes it just as good for a solo coffee as a full breakfast.

6. Estratto
A petite coffeeshop just outside of the Gastown core, Estratto is a specialty coffeeshop with exceptional in-house roasted beans. What it lacks in space it makes up for in precision, drawing a steady line of regulars who don’t mind waiting for a coffee made with real care.

7. Celeste Cafe
The newest addition to the block, Celeste is a tiny coffee window tucked into the historic Anchor Building, right across the street from Block House. Coffee, smoothies, and pastries run out of a footprint barely bigger than a closet, but the real draw is out front: a cluster of bistro tables spilling across a brick plaza, perfect for watching Gastown go by.
